Preliminary Court, DONE
We just got back from pre-court. We got there early and went into the Judge’s office and she looked through about a half of foot thick of paperwork. The head of the baby house was there, a lady from the Department of Education, our coordinator and of course us. The Judge had questions that she asked everyone and then she started to asked me a bunch of questions. They were all pretty easy and it went off without a hitch. The hardest one was: What child do you want to adopt? The correct answer was: Nadya Zuonaryeva. I guess I said it correctly since she didn’t say there was no such baby available for adoption. The only question Melissa had to answer was what is you birthday. The Judge has asked that she get a copy of some death certificates to show that Sophia doesn’t have any living relatives. She then said she would set a court date and there was discussions about dates (in Russian) and they finally said the date would be August 7th at 10:00 AM. The Judge then said that Melissa might get a present for her birthday which is the following day.
With all that in mind we are going to now try to figure out when we can get a flight out of here. We are thinking that we will return to the US around the 10th or 11th. The only sad thing is that we can't wait until Sophia is ready to come home with us. There is a mandatory appeal period of 15 days following court and then they will get her paperwork ready for her to come to the US. So it looks like I will fly back to Kazakhstan the first week of September to bring Sophia home where she will be allowed to eat ice cream, have cold drinks, see what a TV looks like, what air conditioning feels like and be allowed to run around without 10 layers of clothes on. These are all things that will be so new to her.
Tonight we are heading out for a celebration dinner. We’ll fill you in tomorrow.

Congrats on getting through pre-court! I know you are bummed that you have to return home without your baby girl. That is tough, but just keep September in your mind and then you will be a forever family :) Where did you go for your celebration dinner?
Mel and Bill,
I can't even find the right words to express how happy I am for you both!! And it sounds like Mel is going to get the ultimate birthday present - the gift of motherhood. We are ALL smiling today too!!
Hugs,
Tammy :)
Congratuations!!!! What an absolutely amazing feeling. And it seems like the judge isn't making you wait the entire 4 weeks between pre-court and final court. We couldn't be happier for you. Once these kiddies come home, there is no stopping them. Enjoy your new family! Give our love to Olesya and Nellie. They're the best!
Shana, Larry and Adam.
congratulations!!! and 3 weeks for a court date-that is what we had. It seems so silly doesn't it? to make you wait...but tis how the game is played!
Nadya is a pretty name! I'm so glad she has a family now-so heartbreaking to have no living relatives! Has she lived in the baby house her whole lil life? I know Leeza was taken there right after the maternity hosptital.
Joe left after precourt and came back for court and left again-and then flew back to go home with us. He was a real trooper.
I'm so happy that this part is OVER and you can move forward to bringing that spunky girl HOME FOREVER! :)
We know how difficult it will be to leave her, but the next time you see her (and it won't be that long) she is permanently yours! Tammy is right - the best birthday present of all!
Aunt Michie and Uncle David
SOOOOOO excited!!!! Bring that sweet little girl home and her Mommy and Daddy! We miss you and love you and can't wait for you to all be here.
Congrats on finishing Step 2 pre court! Just 2 more steps to go! I know I always felt better after reaching each of these milestones. As hard as it is to leave after court, when you come home you are motivated by preparing for her arrivial and making sure everything is perfect that the time goes by quickly.
Sophia is such a cutie. She looks so happy when she is with you!
Take care,
Beth Ann
yaaay! Can't wait to see her! so when you go back Bill, you're basically going to land, grab her, run like hell before they can layer her up wih 7 pairs of socks and grab the next plane out of there? or if you just want to stay there, we promise not to rob anyone or set anything on fire until you get back....although, send missy cause i am due for my annual haircut. just kidding!
congratualations on making it through pre-court, I cannot imagine how scary it must feel walking in there and not knowing what all will happen, but sounds like you guys did terrific! keep your chins up, your family will be home before you know it! We can't wait to have you over for dinner to celebrate and have you fill us in on all the good stuff! D & C
