Big day in Kazakhstan

Tomorrow there is some big summit in Kostani and there has been all sorts of activity around town. The president of Kazakhstan is reported to be here along with several other presidents from around the world. There is police/security/military every place you look. When we got off the bus today close to the apartment they were telling everyone to clear the area. At least that's what we think they said because everyone was moving back and it seemed to make them happy. It appeared as if there was going to be some sort of motorcade coming through and there wasn't a single civilian car parked at the shopping area. I wanted to stick around and catch a peek but Melissa wanted to get far away. She won. We're told that there was going to be 36 airplanes landing at the local airport today. That's big since the normal day there is only two planes in and out in a day. We could hear sirens off and on most of the day. Since we have been here I have heard very few sirens. Apparently this will be going on for the next few days.

Before all this excitement we visited Sophia at the baby house for the standard 1 1/2 hour visit. It's hard to believe that out of 24 hours in a day we can only visit for 1 1/2 hour. It's all good thought. They know what there doing and take really good care of the babies. Sophia seems to be more and more content with us everyday. We have also noticed that she is developing well and seems to enjoy our company.

After our visit we went to a local cafe downtown. I decided today was as good of any day to try the local meat; horse. I had a bowl of horse soup which was served in a horse broth with onions and noodles. It tasted like chicken. No, really it was good and hold on to your socks, Melissa tried it to. Enjoy the photos from today.

We call this Sophia's Russian look.

Bill,

That is so crazy that they are having the summit now. They told us that it was supposed to happen while we were there last summer. They really fixed up the city last summer putting in all of the pavers in the center of town for it. They worked really fast, too. That is cool that you two get to witness the big event in Kostanai. And it is a big event, so enjoy any festivities that go along with it! Remember that you can ask for more time with Sophia (especially after the bonding period). It can't hurt to ask and you just might get it. You are in the same complex where we lived, but a different building. Don't you just love the landscaping? :) Love the photos of you two and Sophia! And the photo of Melissa reading Twilight!

I love this little dress. Sophia looks so adorable. It is amazing how she is taking on both of your mannerisms, even though you spend just 1 1/2 hours a day with her. How sweet it must be when you see that first smile each day! Missy, good for you for finding the courage to try that soup!

Love,
Tamara

Bill and Melissa -

We loved the horse soup too! That cafe is one of Olessya's favorites. I love following your blog and remembering so much from our trip just last November/December. We stayed in the hotel ... a bit less risky.

You already not only look like a family, but you are a family. It's amazing how quickly our hearts can bond and it feels like someone has been ours for their whole life even though we only met them recently.

I second the comment of asking for more time. Unless the rules changed with the new director, we got 2 hours, but only after we asked for an extra 30 minutes.

Enjoy the experience. It's a once-in-a-lifetime and keep the posts and the photos coming.

Shana, Larry and Adam.

Wasn't the horse soup great! That is something we really missed. Did you go to the "Little cafe" perhaps? Olesya always said they had the best horse soup.

The president came when we were there too...but we never saw him. :)

and, my son, Sean LOVED the horse soup. We miss the food in Kostanai so much. People complained so much about the food in Kaz i was all reaady for it to be awful...but nope, we LOVED it and ate very well. In fact, I miss the food. :)

Our experience was so much more positive and fun than I had expected it to be...everything was asmazing and I was just so happy to be visiting my baby girl everyday, had the food been awful, I dont think i would have cared.

Sophie is such a cutie pie! :)
We asked for extra time with Leeza and got almost 4 hours, but we waited a week or two, then i just kept showing up a lil bit earlier. :)

We would get there about 11:15 when she woke up from nap and stay until 3 and feed her snack and then put her down for a nap. :)
2 hours was not nearly long enough so I asked for more after about a week. :)
